Torrikees

We bought our first Keeshond – Toby – in 1982 from the local newspaper and so began our love affair with the breed.

Ch. Swashway Flicka of Torrikees (Lola)

Since then we have taken on two bitches from Keeshond rescue – Flossie and Zella – and in 1986 our first puppy -Gavimir Tarsier (Oliver), who was a son of Ch. Gavimir Nighthawk, joined us from Pam Luckhurst and through him I was soon hooked on showing.

In 1988 we had Zelandzcar Zerianda (Rossvale Silver Fox x Keesland Jade of Zelandzcar) from Joi Barnes and she did well at Open and Championship shows and gained her stud book number.

Her niece Zelandzcar Zorrolei (Ch. Ledwell Silver Dollar x Zelandzcar Zelandine) came next in 1991 but did not really take to showing so went to the Husky rally’s instead.

In 1993 we were joined by Swashway Flicka of Torrikees (Ch. Candymay Cedar x Ch. Swashway Spark To A Flame) from Eileen Wilding and Rosie Francis and she went on to win 5 CC’s and 1 reserve CC.

She was mated to Am. Lux. Ch. Dehaan’s Walk This Way in 1998 and this produced Torrikees Miss Behavin’ (Maddie), who we kept and has 1 CC and 2 reserve CC’s, and Am Ch Torrikees Show Me The Walk (Zach), who also has 1 CC and Torrikees The Clansman of Saraveta (Dougal), who is currently having a great career as a veteran including many best veteran in group and in show.

January 2005, saw two new additions from the Trumpet kennel of Beth Blankenship in Memphis, Tennessee and co-bred with Wade Koistinen – Laser Keeshonden.

In his first year in the UK, Sparky won 3 CC’s, 2 with BOB, to become a champion on both side’s of the Atlantic as well as Group 3 at South Wales Championship Show. He also won Best in Show at an Open show which qualified him for the Top Dog of Devon event which he also won. Sparky also found time to appear on TV on Channel 4’s T4 as a fashion model hosted by Steve Jones which he took in his stride.

Kizmet has only been shown lightly but has always been placed highly at the Championship shows she has attended and has won Reserve Best in Show at open show level.

In December 2006, Kizmet produced a litter of 5 sired by Swashway Muscadet. We kept a bitch – Torrikees With Attitude (Aspen), and she has had a good start to her career by winning two best puppy in breed awards at championship shows and adding puppy group 4 at Bournemouth.

In 2008 Aspen has consistently been placed 1st or 2nd at all of the championship shows she has attended and also won the Reserve CC at the Welsh Kennel Club Championship show and Group 1 at Okehampton and District Open show.’

In February 2008, Kizmet gave birth to 4 puppies in her second litter sired by Allforus Frosting Over Lekkerbek. Torrikees Miss Dior, (Misty), went to live with Sharon Parsley who has allowed me to show her. She has been to very few shows but at only 8 months old, won the Reserve CC at Midland Counties Championship Show as well as Best Puppy in breed and was Best Puppy Bitch at the Keeshond Club Open Show. Her brother Torrikees Who’s The Boss, (Bertie), owned by Antonia and Peter Atkinson, has proved he has brains as well as beauty having passed his Bronze Kennel Club Good Citizen test when he was only 8 months old and in March by winning Best Puppy at Crufts. Which made Antonia’s and my day.

We had most of 2009 off from the show ring as both Aspen and Kizmet were on maternity duty. We mated Aspen to Sparky and in July, she gave birth to one puppy, Torrikees Definitely Maybe (Megan). Megan has won quite a few puppy group placings at open shows and Reserve Best Puppy in Show at Okehampton and District Open Show. She also has qualified for Crufts 2011 by winning minor puppy bitch at the Keeshond Club Championship show. She is taking a back seat at the moment to her niece Maisie.

We also imported semen from Am Ch Shakota’s Shot In The Dark, a beautiful sound dog who had won the National in 2007. The first attempt to use it on Kizmet did not work but luckily the second time it was successful and in October, she also gave birth to one puppy bitch – we were not doing a lot to increase the kees population in the UK! She is called Torrikees American Affair or Maisie to her friends and is having a great puppy career. At 9 months of age she has numerous puppy group placings at open shows including two puppy group 1’s and a BOB. At Championship shows she has already won two reserve CC’s and a best puppy in breed and we are so proud of her.

All of our Keeshonds and the stud dogs we use are PHPT negative and put through the epilepsy survey
