The Keeshond Club Open Show
October 13th 2018
Thank you to all the exhibitors who kindly gave me an entry today, I was particularly impressed with all the dogs temperaments, dentition and movement -which on the whole was very good. The males had the advantage today with their coats generally being in better condition than most of the adult bitches who were in-between coats. As always the hard work the committee put into their show was evident and a lovely atmosphere prevailed through out the day.
Best in Show. Wilkes‘s – Helkeesen Surfin At Dararaikees
Res. BIS Lindsay’s – Mezanda Merry Starshower
Best Opposite Sex – Mathew’s Szaryk Aphrodite At Valindale
Best Puppy in Show – Mathew’s Szaryk Aphrodite At Valindale
Best Veteran in Show Wilkes‘s – Helkeesen Surfin At Dararaikees
Puppy Dog
- Wilkin’s Whizzkees Opal Solomon. At 9 months this young male shows good promise, he’s a balanced dog, growing up evenly with plenty of bone and a good harsh coat coming through. Head is masculine and his expression is keen . I liked his head particularly his ear size and shape. He’s well ribbed with a strong back and good tailset. His front and feet still need to tighten, and his black feet need to clear but that should come with time . He moved steady , sound & positive . Res BPIS
Junior Dog
1.Lush’s Ednaaron Moon Light. 13 month old male of correct size , pleasing wedge shaped head with a strong muzzle, dark almond eyes and neat ears , correct bite , strong through the body and topline with good tailset and a tight tail . His colour and markings are appealing. I’d prefer stronger front pasterns and slightly shorter rear pasterns. His rear quarters are impressively muscled.
Limit Dog
- Harris’s Neradmik Cary Grant for Watchkees
Not the biggest of males but he shows lovely balance and proportions, he’s square and well boned, carries a beautiful full harsh coat and has a quality breed typical head with expressive dark eyes and small well set thick ears, defined stop and a good muzzle. Hocks are good and rear pasterns are short and strong. Nicely handled and moved to full advantage – brisk and with verve.
Open Dog
- Hickson’s Kichigai Only The Lonely. I really liked this dog for his size , strong colouring and overall shape. He’s full of character with a keen expression, lovely breed type head, great front with well knucked feet and strong pasterns. Nicely arched neck set well into his well laid shoulders. Level topline with a big well set plume tail. A stylish dog both stacked and on the move who pushed hard for Best dog , lost out today only due to a slight lack of coat .
- Bennett’s Byquy Rich Gent. A bigger dog all round than the winner, I liked his balance, masculine head and his profuse neck ruff and full harsh coat. Excellent front , good bone and stands on strong feet. A very attentive dog with a kind alert expression Moved well with a brisk sound gait.
- Newman’s Leazehond Lightening Bolt . Showed nice balance and profile, and has a decent head with small ears and well defined stop. In full coat but I’d like to see more colour definition in his body
Veteran Dog
- Wilkes Helkeesen Surfin At Dararaikees At almost 9 years this dog is a real credit to his owner, today he put on a faultless performance and really bloomed. He looked a picture both in profile and when moving, impressing in every department and I was very pleased to award him BIS and Best Veteran. He fits the standard so nicely with his classy head, striking colour and markings, perfect for size, body is square with correct angulation front and back and he has very well muscled hind quarters. Moved with great style, being light, brisk and positive in this stride. Attentive and at one with his delighted owner/handler. BIS & BVIS
- Bennett’s Zandvoort Dream Stone. A dog of good type, colour and balance and who moved ok but was definitely feeling is off fore on the stack. He’s got a lovely expression and a nice eye shaped. Coat was at the in between stage today.
- Wilkin’s Ch Pommary Quicksilver At Whizzkees. At 9 1/2 years old he was the oldest here today, and although lacking in coat and teeth he is still showing the attributes that made him a Ch. He has a good outline , arched neck and well laid shoulder and is deep in chest . Carries a good tail and still moves well.
- Lush’s Buchkees Love in the Mist
Breeders Dog
- Lindsay’s Mezanda Merry Starshower A classy dog who impressed me with his excellent breed type. Correct for size, striking in colour and markings , presented in beautiful condition as this handler always does. Super wedge shaped head and well set small, neat ears , good front and feet, strong and fit, square body with well sprung ribs and good depth in the chest. Super plumed, high set tail . Pleased to award him Res Best Dog and Res Best in Show .
- Newman’s Leazehond Lightening Bolt 3rd in Open
- Lush’s Ednaaron Moon Light as Junior
- Hill’s Plymkees Cool Dude SH CM
Not Bred By Exhibitor Dog
- Lush’s Buchkees Love in the Mist . This masculine 8 year old makes a nice outline and has a strong head , he has good bone and feet and is very well muscled in the rear . In full coat today, although shows a little too much tawny colour for my preference.
Puppy Bitch
- Mathew’s Szaryk Aphrodite At Valindale. Two lovely puppies here , both have all the qualities to take them to the top. I just loved this young lady , very alert, feminine, square and balanced . She has a sound front and a strong back , well set tail, lovely rear quarters with low hocks . Growing up evenly and to put the icing on the cake she is a very showy girl who never stops showing , couldn’t fault her stacked or on the move . Best bitch & BPIS
- Lindsay’s Cosmic Dreams Damn You Look Good for Mezanda (imp Nor). Loved this one too, slightly taller than 1 but again such a lot of quality here. Makes a stunning outline, a very classy b who is very pretty , full of expression with small neat ears and dark eyes , in full coat today and carrying a great tail . Well balanced youngster, square and well boned, Beautiful colour and impressed on the move . Res BB
Junior Bitch
- Marshall’s Winklestar Serendipity with Devonia A good sized bitch and although her coat was changing she has a pleasing colour with good definition in her markings. Classy head with small velvety ears and a balanced skull with well defined stop. I’d prefer her hocks a little lower, her feet are nicely knuckled and she moved well .
- Newman’s Leazehond Prairie Flower A bigger bitch than 1 , slightly long in the body and I found her ears rather large . Her eye shape is good, as is her colour although another one who was in between coats today .
Special Yearling Bitch
- Newsman’s Wolfswinkel Maria Ogden At Leazehond Very Pretty in the head , with a 50:50 skull to muzzle ratio, neat well shaped thick ears and dark expressive eyes , enough bone and good feet, strong patterns and a short level back . I’d just like more definition in her markings . Impressed with how well muscled she was, moved well with a brisk sound gait.
Post Grad Bitch
- As Sp Yearling
- Wilkes’s Dakaraikees Silver Charm. Good outline and head on this bitch, and she moves well but her coat was changing today.
- Realer & Whaetley’s Byquy Kinky Boots At Keitakees A lovely head, outline and coat on this girl, pleasing for type and colour but carrying a few extra pounds today which spoiled her movement .
Limit Bitch
- Marshall’s Torrikees Made in Heaven At Devonia A very smart, well groomed girl , lovely for size, type and colour , in full coat today with a big neck ruff and plume tail . A very nice bitch.
Veteran Bitch
- Harding’s Amikirs Amour At almost 10 years old this bitch still moves well, impressive harsh coat and well defined colour , slightly long in the body but shows good depth and has well sprung ribs. Lovely well set tail.
Breeders Bitch
- Lindsay’s Mezanda Melys Sparkles A stylish bitch with a well proportioned wedge shaped head, well marked full standoff coat. Theres lots to like about her, beautifully presented and a great mover, oozes quality and pushed her younger kennel mate hard for RBB
- 2nd Junior
- 2nd Post grad
- Wilkin’s Whizzkees Ebony Sinders JW

Judges Critique for the Special Awards
It was a honour to be asked to judge the Special Award Classes at this very friendly club show. I’d like to thank the committee for my lovely gift of a Keeshond Clock.
To the exhibitors for allowing me the opportunity to judge there lovely dogs.
Class A Special Yearling: 6-2
Quite a mixed class, both in type & for ages.
1st Lush’s: Ednaaron Moon Light; 18 month male, impressive on stand & moved easily here enough to win the class, wouldn’t want him any bigger, wedge shaped head, with dark almond eyes & clear pencil line, moderate stop well placed velvety ears, plenty of ruff on moderately arched neck, well placed shoulders & depth of chest, firm back with high set tightly curled tail, enough muscle to hindquarters for age. Hocks well let down. Harsh dark coat.
2nd Lindsay’s: Cosmic Dreams Dame You Look Good For Mezanda (Imp Nor); 10 month bitch, compact bitch with good breed type, feminine wedge shaped head & dark muzzle, dark eyes clear pencil markings, ears well placed, moderate neck with plenty of ruff, shoulders well laid back with good bredth & depth to chest, well sprung ribs with strong loin area, tail set high & tight double curl to tail. Rear angulation corresponded to front, shame she had been rushed from car to ring as wasn’t quite settled on move, hence her place, but pleased to see later in day that she moved much better & more settled. Coat off standing with lovely depth of colour.
3rd Matthew’s: Szaryk Aphrodite At Valindale;
4th Marshall’s: Winklestar Serendipity With Devonia;
Class B Special Limit 4
1st Harris’s: Neradmik Cary Grant For Watchkees ( Imp Can); liked this young male very much. He had a short compact body with a confident carriage, wedge shaped head with defined stop & dark muzzle, dark almond eyes & ears well placed with clear pencil line, strong neck with large ruff, shoulders well sloped & straight front with plenty of bone, parallel when viewed front & rear. Ribs well sprung strong loin & high set tail with tight curl, well muscled hindquarters with profuse coat on trousers, slightly sloping hocks. Tight well rounded feet, coat harsh & off standing with clear shoulder markings. Moved out briskly.
2nd Marshall’s: Torrikees Made In Heaven At Devonia; Feminine wedge shaped head, soft expression dark muzzle, moderate stop. Moderately arched neck small ruff, shoulders well placed, short compact body, good tail placement, well muscled hindquarters. Just not so steady on move as 1st.
3rd Redler & Wheatley’s: Byquy Kinky Boots At Keitakees;
4th Wilkes, Clarke & Peck’s:Dakaraikees Haristotie
Class C Special Open 4
First two could have changed places, both had good attributes, but just preferred 1st more steady movement & compact body.
1st Hickson & Hickson’s: Kichigal Only The Lonely; wedge shaped head with lovely dark muzzle, well defined stop & dark almond eyes set obliquely with small neat ears & correct bite, moderately long strong neck with profuse ruff, shoulders well laid back with good upper arm, straight front with good bredth to chest reaching elbow, well sprung ribs & strong loin, high tail set with tight double curl, well muscled hindquarters with large fluffy trousers, hocks in line with tight rounded feet. Coat harsh outer with enough undercoat not to make him look stuffy. Moved with brisk easy movement & good rear drive.
2nd Wilkes: Helkeesen Surfin At Dakaraikees; very darkly coloured male with clear markings, slightly heavier built than 1st which I felt made him not quite so brisk on move. But in a bigger ring would be better. Masculine wedge shaped head with well placed ears & eyes almond in shape, moderate stop & correct bite. Strong neck with large ruff, shoulders well laid back with straight front & good bone, chest had plenty of depth, well sprung ribs & firm loin, slightly longer in body than 1st. Tail set high with tight curl, well muscled hindquarters & hocks in line with tight rounded feet. Harsh outer coat with plenty of undercoat, presented well.
3rd Harding’s: Amikirs Amour;
4th Lush’s: Buchkees Love In The Mist;
